The Top 10 Upsets from the 2000's

There is nothing sweeter than the victory of an underdog.  Upsets are one of the things sports can claim which few other factions of life can.  There is a select few of other competitive events aside from sports which can house an upset, but they are almost impossible to name.  Let's take a gander at some upsets you might've missed/forgotten:

#10, 9, 8 USC still blacked out:
The Results:  #1 USC 38....#2 Texas 41 (2005)  #2 USC 31...Oregon State 33 (2006) #1 USC 23....Stanford 24 (2007)
The Story: Contrary to popular belief this is not a college football list...anyway.  This during the era of USC dominance.  They were contending every year for the National Title game and never (and I mean never) lost the Pac-10.  They did, however, suffer three defeats, the last of which was a final knockout from which USC hath never recovered.  First there was Vince Young v. the entire first round of the NFL Draft...Vince Young won.  USC was supposedly the greatest college football team ever, but it took a Bush push to get them to 12-0 and they couldn't even beat a one-man show at Texas.  The following season, USC rose to #2 and looked ready for revenge so long as they didn't have to go to Resar Stadium and play Oregon State.  They did have to do exactly that, and 7 was too many turnovers and the Trojans lost again.  Finally, in 2007 freshman coach Jim Harbaugh led a crispy 41 point underdog team into Southern Cal to face the Trojans in their supposed "resurrection year" after garnering the #1 preseason ranking.  This isn't the preseason.  Harbaugh and the Cardinal stomped all over the Trojans and sauntered out of the Grand Old Lady with a victory.  USC has failed to get up from this blow.  It's been so bad, Pete Carrol decided he'd rather coach the Seattle Seahawks.

#7 2007, Cardinals Turn Green Against the Orange
The Result: #19 Louisville 35....Syracuse 38
It was one of those years where Syracuse fans just couldn't wait for basketball season.  The Orange would finish a dreadful 2-10 and only win one game in the not-quite-so-vaunted Big East.  They had just lost to Illinois by 21 and had a top 20 team to amble over to L-Ville  Louisville appeared not to quite be ready for the Orangemen, though.  Louisville had breached the top 10 already and despite a loss to a kinda-decent-because-they-would-go-on-to-beat-#1-LSU Kentucky team.  The Cardinals fell behind early and not even a 21 point charge in the 4th quarter was enough as Syracuse downed the Cardinals and senior Brian Brohm.

#6 2008, Utah pours Sugar on Saban
The Result: #4 Alabama 17.....#7 Utah 31 (2OT)
Nick Saban came to Alabama and whilst his team limped to a 7-6 record in his first season, the Tide began rolling (hahahaha) in 2008-2009.  Alabama went 12-0 in the regular season, but lost to Florida in the SEC Championship game.  The Tide settled for the Sugar Bowl of the 2008-2009 Bowl season against the dynamic Utah Utes.  The Crimson Tide was favored by 17 points and had Senior John Parker Wilson leading the charge.  Brian Johnson made the Tide's defense look silly, as Utah jumped out to a 21-0 lead after 1 quarter.  Bama fought back to 21-17, but it was not to be.  The Utes ended up defeating Bama 31-17...beating the spread by 31 points.

#5 2007, Boise Throws Una Fiesta!
The Result: #7 Oklahoma 42.....#9 Boise State 43 (OT)
No one can forget that Statue of Liberty.  The entire left side of the field welcomed Ian Johnson into the endzone as the Broncos survived a second half Sooners' onslaught in which Oklahoma seemed to remember they had Adrian Peterson.  Boise made a series of remarkable plays, tricking their way into overtime before tricking their way to victory.  A hook and ladder led to overtime when Boise scored on 4th and 18 with 7 seconds left.  Then a HB pass in overtime brought the game up to the final play.  A 2pt conversion Statue of Liberty gave Boise the win and left college football analysts gaping and has given us the Boise State dominated era in non-BCS football.

#4 2010, No Bounce Back from Boise
The Result: #13 Virginia Tech....James Madison 16
The Hokies were the favorite to win the ACC in the preseason and I even selected them to make the National Title Game in 2010.  They started off poorly and really grinded my gears by losing on opening weekend to the notorious Boise State Broncos.  Virginia Tech, however, had a nice little bounce back game against FCS James Madison...that is until they found out James Madison was taking this shit seriously.  Va-Tech led 14-3 at halftime, but obviously the Bulldogs rallied in the second in order to stun Blacksburg and saunter out smoothly with a 16-13 victory.

#3 2010, Cocky Ole Miss meets the FCS
The Result: Ole Miss 48......Jacksonville State 49
Just like many other SEC ball clubs, Ole Miss decided to schedule a "cupcake" game in the first week.  I mean without it their season could be horrendous since they have the potential of going 0-8 in conference every year.  However, Ole Miss was excited to know that former Oregon star Jeremiah Masoli was coming to Oxford (Mississippi) and would be leading the Rebels.  However, he couldn't play week 1.  That's alright, it was Jacksonville State and at the end of the 3rd quarter it was 31-13.  Jacksonville State then entered "Beast Mode" and put up 21 fourth quarter points.  They would complete a two point conversation in the 2nd overtime after the teams matched touchdowns in overtime #1 and win 49-48.

#2 2008, Swampy Conditions Just Right For Slowing Tebow
The Result: #4 Florida 30....Ole Miss 31
Ole Miss had already lost two games, and facing the legendary (not quite at the time) Tim Tebow did not make for a good time.  The Rebels fell behind early (uncharacteristic of an upset) and was trailing  17-7 at half.  Ole Miss decided to pick up the unfortunately named Houston Nutt and ended up shutting down Tebow and company in the second half.  This included Ole Miss stopping Tebow on a RUN on 4th AND 1 in order to clinch victory.  This is the only recorded stopping of Tebow on 4th and 1.

#1 2007, Where is Appalachian State?
The result: #5 Michigan 32....Appalachian State 34
The Story:  Michigan had all the right story lines heading into 2007.  A coach making his swan song and three returning seniors (Jake Long, Mike Hart, and Chad Henne) who forwent the NFL to try and make Lloyd Carr's swan song (the coach special.  All Michigan had to do was saunter through an unusually soft Big-10...oh and 2-time defending FCS (Div-II) Champion Appalachian State.  Michigan was playing in the Big House, scored on their first drive and everyone settled back to allow the onslaught.
Hands on Head: the international symbol for "SHIIIIIIIIT"
Appalachian State decided that college football's natural order was worth ruining, so they kept banging away.  The Mountaineers even had a 14 point lead during the 3rd quarter and lead by 5 entering the fourth.  Still, I mean this is Michigan, at home.  They wouldn't lose (see above picture)?  Perhaps the icing on the delicious, watching Michigan become the first ever ranked D-1 team to lose to a FCS school is how Michigan had an opportunity to win it, but Appalachian State blocked the field goal attempt and time ran out (see above picture).

It's Unfortuante, but it Was Also Time.

No one would have expected Joseph Vincent Paterno to have been fired.  No one would have thought it would be because of a scandal ...especially one of the magnitude which now mires the once "Happy Valley" into a depressed state of disunity.  Heir apparent to Joe-Pa's throne Jerry Sandusky may have cracked the foundation under the 84 year-old's feet...and we know 'Ol Joe doesn't quite have the stability he did back in 1986.  College Football's icon of stability and consistency for decades, Joe Paterno is a man who has a legacy to withstand this scandal, but his program does not have the option of keeping Paterno around.  It would be a mockery to Jim Tressel to allow Pa-Pa to stick around, because this situation makes OSU's "selling our own stuff" situation look like nothing.  Penn State has little option but to have Joe Paterno go on his way, even if it is at the end of this season.  While this is not the end anyone would have imagined or hoped for the iconic coach, his time has long flew by.  Joe Paterno is a legend, the type of coach we may never see.  Loyalty and longevity is always going to be outweighed by coin and championships.  Coaches are not interested in building a program, just a résumé.  Joe Paterno is a once in a lifetime figure...but even so he'll only last a lifetime.  Joe Paterno was flipped to the other side in 1987 and was cooked all the way through last week when he broke the all-time Division-1 wins record.  Paterno has been ready to be eaten for a while and perhaps should've left when he became incapable of being on the sideline for more than two games in a row, but he kept winning and never gave into critics.  The Sandusky situation is one even Joe-Pa cannot quell.  A man who has seen every situation within football has never experienced problems of this sort.  He knows how to break apart a zone defense and bring in blue-chippers, but Joe Paterno does not know how to deal with his arch-enemy which never hath reared its ugly head: instability.  It is time for Paterno to go.  I pray he gets the opportunity he deserves and leaves at the end of this season, retiring at the ripe age of 85.  Joe Paterno is not the man Penn State needs to lead them through what the program will soon encounter.  Ohio State chose sacrificed Luke Fickell, Michigan had their Rich Rodriguez, and now Penn State must find someone who can provide a few years of stability before they can find the man they want to run their program for, let's say 45 years.

Mylo Xyloto

This is my track-by-track review of Coldplay's new album Mylo Xyloyo:

#1 Mylo Xyloto- this little xylophone heavy, 45 second intro is a simple instrumental that plays more like a part of track 2 than its own individual song.

#2 Hurts Like Heaven- Mylo leads directly into this song.  This song is a new one for Coldplay.  The quick beat certainly isn't there forte; however, a nice guitar solo and a crisp sound make this the first of three anthems.

#3 Paradise-Was released as the album's second single.  Paradise is a the album's finest track and an honest to God masterpiece.  Chris Martin hits his falsetto regularly, the beat is there, and the always popular hand claps even make an appearance.  Plus, the lyrics are just beautiful, this song reminds me the most of hits like Viva la Vida and Clocks.

#4 Charlie Brown-A silly little song title, but don't consider this work a slouch.  Charlie Brown is considered by many to be the finest song on the cd.  It really brings to mind songs off the Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends album, especially Lovers in Japan.  Great instrumentalist in the chorus.

#5 Us Against the World-has the oriental sounds our ears became accustomed to in Viva.  This, to me, is the classic slow ballad that Coldplay always has, harkening to Prospekt's March/Poppyfields off the EP, Fix You, The Scientist, and a little of Swallowed in the Sea.

#6 M.M.I.X.-Another instrumental, builds into the first single and the album's best known song at this point.

#7 Every Teardrop is a Waterfall-The first single and therefore the best known song so far from Mylo.  The electronic beat in the background is phenomenal, but my favorite part is the song's plethora of meaningful lyrics.  This song and Paradise go together nicely.

#8 Major Minus-An odd start makes off like a soft alternative, but it progresses into a very alternative sounding song, instead of Coldplay's Indie Rock, with the guitar riffs and solo.

#9 U.F.O.-Chris Martin's vocals are the main focus, never a bad idea for Coldplay.  A soft strum in the background makes this song more than listenable.

#10 Princess of China-The immediate reaction of Coldplay extremists to Rihana's cameo is to vomit, as I did, but the song actually turned out fantastic.  Ri-Ri's voice sounds superb alongside Chris Martin's.  This song is far from classic Coldplay, almost a selling out to the era of common music, but still has some Coldplay touches in there.

#11 Up in Flames-Another slow song with a myriad of emphasis on vocals.  The worst song on the album, but that is relative to other music.  Very listenable, but other songs off Mylo are recommended.

#12 Hopeful Transmission-the last instrumental, not much to say here

#13 Don't Let it Break Your Heart-the song which most brings back the songs from A Rush of Blood to the Head and X&Y which were Coldplay's two best up to this point.  Compared to Paradise, Charlie Brown, and Every Teardrop is a Waterfull this song is rather unmemorable.

#14 Up With the Birds-The previous song leads nicely into the finale.  This song is no anthem the way Paradise and Charlie Brown are, but it has it's own strengths.  I love Coldplay when it goes slower paced and focus on Chris Martin's voice.  No need to get fancy when you can put together something like this last song.  A good finale to a great album

Random Mumblings and Grumblings

Sitting in my room with nothing to do other than blog on a Tuesday night is no uncommon thing; however, I have decided tonight I will actually release my thoughts to the web in a compilation of thoughts and things that no one ever saw coming:

-I cannot help but wonder what happened to all the kids in Willy Wonka after their traumatic experiences.  Augustus was sucked through the chocolate, Veruca feel into the incinerator, Violet was rolled out whilst expanding into a very pop-able blueberry, and Mike was shrunk to the size of the average WNBA player.  The tales of what occurred following these certainly traumatizing events were never reported.  I mean clearly Wonka had the kids sign a waiver, so no law-suits were filed, but one must wonder how far had Wonka gone on the document?  I mean he probably just wrote on there somewhere "You cannot sue me".  In other words, Wonka was giving an extremely large and prevalent middle finger to all the parents present, especially seeing as how there is no way Veruca survived her run-in with the incinerator, no matter what the rating of the movie was.
The MPAA tells us "G"...I am relatively unconvinced
-When did Mike Brown suddenly become so football savvy?  Here he is sitting on a Quarterback who is near worthless, hasn't thrown on the pads since 2010-2011, and won't play.  So what does he do?  He refuses to trade the disgruntled Carson Palmer, and suddenly the Quarterback's stock soars.  The Colts show interest...Mike Brown says, "No".  Then the Oakland Raiders come knocking.  The Raiders are world renowned for destroying 1st overall picks, like the vaunted talent of JaMarcus Russell.  The Bengals received beyond what they could have dreamed of for Palmer.  A first round pick in 2012 and a possible 1st rounder in 2013 with a 2nd rounder guaranteed?  It's safe to say Al Davis just rolled over in his freshly packed grave.  Congrats, Oakland, you have made the worst trade in team history and given Cincinnati a little reason to think Mike Brown does care about our football team.

-I silently wonder to myself what is becoming of myself.  The world is moving a little too quick right now.  Who are my real friends?  What do I do to keep some and what do I do to keep others?  Is it still alright for me to just live as myself with no regrets?  Or does that only lead to people suspecting me of being a self-obsessed douche?  Does that matter though?  Hahaha, oh well, it looks like this is something I must allow to marinate a little longer.

-Adele's "Someone Like You" just came on my shuffle.  The song is so beautiful, it literally brings a tear to my heart's eye.  When did music become so important in my life?  Suddenly there is a song to fit every moment and every obstacle life seems to cast my way.  Songs give life a whole new outlook.  Things seem a little differently when you use a song to describe it.  The song "Fix You" by Coldplay has become so meaningful to me as I think of a relationship gone astray which meant so much to me for two years.  "When you love something and it goes to waste, could it be worse?"  I truly feel no, it couldn't.  As Coldplay will say in its other song "The Scientist", "No one ever said it would be this hard".  Or maybe another song lyric, "Life ain't always beautiful" or possibly even a little Hip-Hop/Rap with Kid Cudi's "All Along": "All along, I know I am meant to be alone...out here on my own".  Music is something everyone should enjoy because there is meaning for everyone in at least one song at any given time.

-I saw a picture of someone I used to be close friends with on Facebook.  I haven't talked to this person in quite a long time.  I s'pose it happens to people, losing friends as they move through life.  It is a shame that it does happen.  To continue with song lyrics, Sugarland would tell you, "Ain't no rhyme or reason, no complicated meaning...fact is, it happens".  I have to wonder, is it okay to post on this person's wall with a provoking post like, "Heyyy, miss you!  Wish we could hangout, see you on the flip side!" or is this a docuhey thing to do?  Does it matter if other people think it is douchey?  Does it matter that my other friends may not be so keen on hanging out with that person?  Dammit life, you have made me think again, what am I ever going to do with you?

-I am leading a Kairos in six days, that's something scary to think about.  My nerves crank up a little just thinking about it.  Even more excruciating is that I am the Rector.  Basically I am the leader of the leaders.  I have to make sure everything goes swimmingly.  It is a tough role to fill, but I'll f'ckn do it.  My worst fear is what the letters I receive will hold.  I was surprised by some of the letters I received the last time.  I expect similar people will write me letters this time around, but I wonder if someone else will decide to throw something my way.  We'll see what happens, I s'pose.  I pray that my speech goes well and that everyone takes the meaning from it that I would like them to.

-I am curious, what ever happened with the Libyans at the end of Back to the Future?  Did they just go home?  If so, were they a part of the recent uprisings?  Wouldn't their plutonium and such help them?

-Why didn't Darth Maul attack Obi Wan when he leaped at him at the end of Star Wars episode I?  Was Darth Maul really that stunned at a trained Jedi pulling off some wicked acrobatics?  Maybe the better question is why didn't Darth Maul just slice his fingers when he was holding onto the little tube in the never ending abyss?  Literally, just reach down?  Had Darth Maul never seen a big hole before?  Was it that enticing to sit there and swing his saber back and forth on the tube's edge?  I mean this guy had spent the better part of a half hour beating back the two best Jedi in the galaxy, but when only the younger, less experienced, more neophyte one is left, he freezes and decides to swing his weapon against the edge of a hole.  Darth Maul is easily the most badass person in the entire history of Star Wars, unfortunately Obi Wan found his only weakness..he enjoys making sparks on the edge of gigantic holes when he is about to finish off the heroes and ultimately win the entire war for the empire.
Yipee!  Woo!  Sparks!! Yayay!!
-Finally, Coldplay releases Mylo Xyloto on October 24th.  Anyone that doesn't go out and buy a hard copy of the cd is a fool.

College Football is beat

I am withdrawing my bi-weekly college football posts.  Just reminding the world that I picked Wisconsin to win the National Title.

College Football Weeks 3 and 4

Well, we have survived another two weeks of college football, here are the key events:

-Syracuse and Pitt announced they are leaving the Big East, leaving the conference in apparent shambles, nice job, TCU

-LSU officially takes over as the #1 team in the nation after beating their third ranked team in four weeks.  The Tigers defeated #16 West Virginia.

-Florida State freefalls with losses to Oklahoma and Clemson

-The most important game of Week 4 ended in a 30-29 final as Oklahoma State defeated Texas A&M

-Only USC lost as a favorite in the top 25 during week 4.

-Michigan finished undefeated for the second straight year in non-conference as Big Ten play looms

Aside from that nothing too important happened.  The season appears to be rather normal this year, featuring little surprises through four weeks.

College Football Weeks 1 & 2:

We have already seen a lot happen in weeks one and two of college football.  I think much has been learned and teams are showing their mettle.

-Oregon is all but eliminated from the National Title hunt after losing to LSU week 1.

-Boise State all but guaranteed an undefeated season by beating Georgia week 1.

-My two National Title picks Wisconsin and Florida State have won a combined 182-27 in weeks one and two.

-Ohio State sneaked by upset minded Toledo 27-22 in week 2.  We have seen OSU struggle before early, beating the Ohio University Bobcats by only 12 at home in 2008.  That team went on the the Fiesta Bowl.

-Only Oregon has lost in the top 10.

-Michigan beat Notre Dame 35-31 on a touchdown pass to Roy Roundtree with .02 seconds left.

-The Irish are 0-2 again and face #15 Michigan State on Saturday.

-Despite bad signs, the top four teams in the SEC (Bama, LSU, Arkansas, and South Carolina) all went unscathed through the first two weeks.

-Baylor upset TCU and begins a dark horse campaign as the best team you haven't heard anything about in a quest for the Big XII title.

-Oklahoma and Florida State meet in Tallahassee which is regarded as the biggest game this year and a virtual elimination game from BCS National Championship contention for the loser and major props for the winner.
